How High to Hang Curtains: Height, Width, Length

Photo by Max Vakhtbovych on Pexels
Hang the curtain rod 4–6 inches above the top of the window frame on an 8-foot ceiling, and extend it 6–12 inches past each side. Go higher on taller ceilings. Then pick a length that hovers about ½ inch above the floor or is long enough to touch the floor. Those are the figures from Veil Veil and The Shade Store.
These sizes are retailer guidance, so treat them as ranges and check your own wall.
How high should you hang curtains above the window?
Hang the rod 4–6 inches above the window frame on a standard 8-foot ceiling, and higher as the ceiling goes up. Veil Veil gives 6–12 inches above the frame as a general range, then narrows it by ceiling height. Rod placement is the one window treatment choice a longer panel can’t fix.
| Ceiling | Rod height above the window frame |
|---|---|
| 8 ft | 4–6 in |
| 10 ft | 8–10 in |
| 12 ft | About 24 in (⅙ of the ceiling height, our arithmetic) |
| Vaulted | Up to 12 in |
| Crown molding | 1 in below the molding’s lowest point |
A rod mounted right on the window trim leaves a strip of bare wall above it, like a forehead. Mark the height with a pencil first, and step back before you drill.

Should you hang curtains close to the ceiling?
Yes, hang them as high as the room allows. America’s Floor Source calls hanging drapes close to the ceiling a common professional trick, because it draws the eye upward, creating the illusion of height in the window and the wall. It is the cheapest upgrade in this whole room: a ladder, a pencil and a stud finder.
Anchor the brackets into studs or proper wall anchors, because Veil Veil warns that the weight of the fabric will pull hardware out of bare drywall over time. If you rent and don’t want holes, our guide to hanging curtains without drilling is on the list.
Linen panels hung near the ceiling are also the finishing step in our organic modern style guide.

How far should the curtain rod extend past the window?
Extend the rod 6–12 inches past each side of the frame, so the open panels stack on the wall instead of over the glass. The Shade Store and America’s Floor Source both give 6–12 inches, and Veil Veil says 8–12. A rod the width of the window turns curtains into permanent shutters. Sheer curtains need more fullness than heavy drapery: 2.5 to 3 times the span, against 1.5 to 2.

How long should curtains be: floor, hover or puddle?
Curtains should end ½–1 inch above the floor or just touch it. That hover or floor-kiss finish is the low-maintenance choice for a living room, and Veil Veil suggests ending ½ inch off the floor in formal rooms and 1 inch in bedrooms.
| Length | Where it ends | Fits |
|---|---|---|
| Hover | ½–1 in above the floor | High-traffic rooms, easy upkeep |
| Floor-kiss | Just touching the floor | Living rooms, light sheers |
| Break | Float length plus 1–2 in | A slightly relaxed look |
| Puddle | Float length plus 3–6 in | Formal, high maintenance |
The Shade Store defines float length as the rod-to-floor distance minus ¼ to ½ inch. Ready-made panels come in 63, 84, 96, 108 and 120 inches, so measure from the rod to the floor and pick the closest.
Our verdict: skip the puddle in a rental. A puddle is lovely for a week, then it becomes a floor mop you hung on purpose.

How do you measure and order curtains?
Mark the rod height first, then take the measurement from that mark to the floor. Do it in order:
- Mark the rod height from the table above, in pencil, at both ends and the middle.
- Measure from each mark to the floor. Floors are rarely level, so use the shortest number.
- Subtract ¼–½ inch for a hover finish.
- Pick the closest standard length: 63, 84, 96, 108 or 120 inches.
- Work out the width: window width plus 6–12 inches per side, times 1.5 to 2.
What if your windows differ in height or sit beside a bed?
Install every rod at the height of the tallest window plus 6 inches, then trim each panel to length. Veil Veil says this keeps one clean line across the wall.
Behind a bed, mount the rod 2 inches below the ceiling and let it extend 12 or more inches beyond the bed frame, so the curtains clear the headboard when open.

What comes after the curtain height?
Higher, wider, then a length you can live with. Pick the sofa the curtains will frame with our loveseat vs sofa guide, and if the panel doubles as a divider, our small apartment ideas cover the track options.

Frequently asked questions
What height to hang a curtain rod for 84 inch curtains?
Hang the rod about 84 inches above the floor, a hair more for a hover finish. The Shade Store sizes a float-length panel at the rod-to-floor distance minus ¼ to ½ inch, so an 84-inch panel suits a rod roughly 84½ inches up. Measure from the floor to your marked rod height, not from the ceiling.
How to measure curtain rod length?
Measure the window frame, then add 6 to 12 inches on each side so the panels can stack clear of the glass. A 36-inch window gets a rod of about 48 to 60 inches. That leaves the open panels beside the window, not over the glass.
How to measure curtain size?
Measure the rod-to-floor distance for length and pick the closest standard size: 63, 84, 96, 108 or 120 inches. For width, multiply the span the curtains cover by 1.5 to 2, or 2.5 to 3 for sheers. A 60-inch span needs 90 to 120 inches of total panel width.
Do curtains hung higher make a ceiling appear taller?
Yes. Hanging the rod close to the ceiling draws the eye upward, so the wall and the window look taller than they are. America's Floor Source calls it a common professional trick. Keep the rod 1 inch below crown molding, and use full-length panels so the effect reads as one tall line.
